Data Collection & Research

These NOAA-funded projects track marine debris in the marine environment or on-shore. Some of them create databases of debris concentrations for clean-up purposes.

  • Assessing the Socio-economic Costs of Marine Debris and the Benefits of Abatement, Phase 2: Model Development, Data Gap Analysis and Survey Design (Nationwide)

  • Emergency Response Field Data Collection - Integrating marine debris and shoreline assessment data through a common data standard (Nationwide)

  • Coordinating Our Efforts: Establishing Effective and Scientifically Sound Marine Debris Goals, Practices, and Outreach for Alaska (Alaska)

  • Assessment, monitoring, and reduction of the causes and impacts of marine debris in the South Atlantic Bight (Florida to North Carolina)

  • A Survey of Invertebrate and Algal Communities Colonizing Marine Debris in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (Hawaii)

  • [Ongoing] Gulf of Mexico Marine Debris Mapping Project (Gulf of Mexico)

On-the-Ground-Efforts

These projects and programs describe marine debris cleanup activities funded by NOAA throughout the nation.

  • Marine Debris Survey and Removal from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) Marine National Monument: Maintenance Mode (Hawaii)

  • Combining a Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program in North Carolina with a Debris Accumulation, Removal, and Impact Assessment (North Carolina)

  • Development of a Coordinated Strategy for the Washington Outer Coast Beach Cleanup and Debris Cache Removal (Washington)

  • [Ongoing] International Coastal Clean-up (Nationwide)

Derelict Fishing Gear

These NOAA Marine Debris projects focus on addressing derelict fishing gear in its many forms.

  • An Assessment of derelict fishing gear and other marine debris in deepwater benthic habitats off California (California)

  • Derelict Traps and Casita Debris in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary: Distribution, Habitat Impacts, and Bycatch Mortality (Florida)

  • Impact Assessment, Recovery, and Prevention of Derelict Fishing Gear (crab traps) in Chesapeake Bay (Maryland, Virginia)

  • Demonstration project for at-sea retrieval and shore-side removal of derelict fishing gear from the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (Massachusetts)

  • Recovery and subsequent disposal of ghost Black Sea Bass traps in the U.S. South Atlantic Fishery Management Area (North Carolina)
