The NOAA Marine Debris Program supports several grant opportunities for marine debris activities. The first is in cooperation with the NOAA Restoration Center’s Community-based Restoration Program, the second is an outreach and education partnership opportunity, and the third is in partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Covanta Energy Corporation.
NOAA Marine Debris Program Grant Guidelines
The NOAA Marine Debris Program Grant Program Guidelines, published December 21, 2009 in the Federal Register, provide information for potential applicants to the NOAA Marine Debris Program’s (MDP) grant program. In regard to MDP grants that may be awarded by NOAA through competitive solicitations, the guidelines explain the grant program goals and objectives, and the implementation of the competitive grant program.
1. Community-based Marine Debris Removal Grant
In cooperation with the NOAA Restoration Center, the NOAA Marine Debris Program offers another funding opportunity. This funding supports locally driven, community-based marine debris prevention and removal projects that benefit coastal habitat, waterways, and wildlife including migratory fish.
This grant typically opens in the summer with proposals due late October/early November. Please check this page or sign up for our weekly reports for more information and updates.
FY2012 grant is now open.
Submission deadline is November 1, 2011.
Projects awarded through this grant competition have strong on-the-ground habitat components involving the removal of marine debris and derelict fishing gear, as well as activities that provide social benefits for people and their communities in addition to long-term ecological habitat improvements for NOAA trust resources. Through this solicitation NOAA identifies marine debris removal projects, strengthens the development and implementation of habitat restoration through community-based marine debris removal, and fosters awareness of the effects of marine debris to further the conservation of living marine resource habitats. Successful proposals through this solicitation will be funded through a cooperative agreement. Funding of up to $2,000,000 is expected to be available for Community-based Marine Debris Removal Project Grants in FY2012. Typical awards will range from $15,000 to $150,000.

2. Fishing for Energy Small Grants Fund
With support from the NOAA Marine Debris Program and Covanta Energy Corporation, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will provide funding to Fishing for Energy Partnership ports, their partners, or other commercial fishing ports to provide capacity and incentives to address old, abandoned or derelict fishing gear.

3. Marine Debris Prevention and Outreach Partnership Grant
This grant invited the public to submit applications requesting funding to establish multi-year national and regional partnerships focusing on utilizing existing networks and expanding on existing resources to address marine debris through prevention, education, and outreach activities, and the dissemination and/or development of tools to support these activities. Partnerships are expected to catalyze the public or a target audience to address marine debris in a way that will benefit living marine resources and/or navigation safety.
This grant is closed. Proposals were due February 18, 2010.
