International Coastal Cleanup 2006
NOAA Teams gathered together on Saturday, September 16, 2006 to clean up shorelines across the nation for the International Coastal Cleanup/NOAA Cleanup Day.
Forty-nine NOAA staff, families, and friends gathered to participate in the Washington D.C. International Coastal Cleanup/NOAA Cleanup Day. The site for this clean-up was along the Anacostia Watershed at Watts Branch. The team cleared away over 16 tons of trash, including 55 tires, clothing, the front end of a 57 Chevy, building materials and other miscellaneous trash. The most interesting item collected was an entire kitchen sink and countertop.
In Hawaii, 48 NOAA staff, their family and friends came out to clear the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor and Ala Moana beach area of marine debris. In total, with dozens of nets, gloves, trash bags, and one boat, approximately 1,400 lbs. of debris was removed from 6 miles of coastline.
