NOAA Submerged Derelict Trap Detection Methods Workshop
June 2-4, 2009; Silver Spring, MD

Background
The NOAA Submerged Derelict Trap Methodology Detection Workshop was held June 2-4, 2009, in Silver Spring, Maryland. The objectives of this workshop were to review existing methods for locating, surveying, and assessing derelict traps, to share best practices across different projects, and to prepare a document that would be available to any interested party to assist them in choosing the best detection system. This invitation-only workshop was hosted by the NOAA Marine Debris Program.
Days were organized to focus the first day on derelict pot detection methodology and the second day on techniques for assessing impacts to habitat, target and/or non-target species from derelict pots, which varied by project. A Detection System Selection Guide was developed based on the discussion at the workshop and the presenter abstracts and presentations.
